BBC Breakfast is now making news stories available for download as video podcasts. I like the idea – order some news to go with your coffee and muffin if you travel by public transport to work. It’s interesting to watch the BBC embrace new media technologies to maintain and grow an audience for their content. Of course, the BBC does have the advantage of being funded by
government, i.e. tax (everyone in the UK has to pay a license fee to have a TV, regardless of any attempt to claim you don’t watch any of the BBC channels) so they don’t have to worry about generating advertising revenue for these ventures. But all the more reason for commercial channels to track what they do and identify potential business models that emerge (what works and what doesn’t).
